The rules it follows

These are the rules Pocket's own Tax page uses, for a resident individual under 60. Budget 2026 left the slabs, the rebate and the surcharge as they were for FY 2025-26.

  • Standard deduction from a salary: ₹75,000 in the new regime, ₹50,000 in the old.
  • Rebate: no tax on taxable income up to ₹12,00,000 in the new regime, and up to ₹5,00,000 in the old (section 87A of the Income-tax Act, 1961; section 156 of the Income-tax Act, 2025).
  • Marginal relief in the new regime: just above ₹12,00,000, the tax is at most the income above it. The old regime has none, so one rupee over ₹5,00,000 costs the whole slab tax.
  • Surcharge on taxable income above ₹50 lakh: 10% of the tax, 15% above ₹1 crore and 25% above ₹2 crore in both regimes; above ₹5 crore, 37% in the old regime and still 25% in the new. Marginal relief keeps the extra tax above each threshold to at most the income above it.
  • Cess: 4% of the tax and surcharge, in both.
  • 80C counts up to ₹1,50,000 in all; 80D up to ₹25,000 for you, your spouse and children and ₹25,000 more for your parents, each ₹50,000 when one of them is 60 or over (section 80D; section 126 of the Income-tax Act, 2025). Neither is allowed in the new regime.

What it leaves out

  • Income other than salary: interest, rent, a business, and capital gains, which have rates of their own (Pocket's Tax page adds them).
  • The limits of the other deductions, which are counted as typed: NPS under 80CCD(1B), for example, is at most ₹50,000.
  • Deductions the new regime does allow, such as an employer's NPS contribution under 80CCD(2).
  • The old regime's slabs for people 60 or over, which start higher.
  • Rounding: a return rounds income and tax to the nearest ₹10 (sections 288A and 288B of the 1961 Act). This calculator works to the paisa, as Pocket does.

It is a planning estimate for salary income, not a tax return or tax advice: the Income Tax Department's own calculator, at incometaxindia.gov.in, and a chartered accountant have the final word.
